WE’RE OPEN: MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY
January 16 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 16, 2017 and enjoy FREE activities for all ages outside of the museum in the courtyard from 11:00am-3:00pm. See below for a full list of activities brought to you by the Museum of the African Diaspora (MOAD) and the Children’s Creativity Museum (CCM).
Peace Quilt: Design a square for our collaborative peace quilt! Describe what peace means to you by using your five senses; What does peace look like? sound like? smell like? taste like? feel like?
Light-up “Stained glass” Peace Mural: Help create a colorful, collaborative peace sign mural using tissue paper and LEDs, inspired by MLK’s quote: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hatred cannot drive out hatred; only love can do that.”
DIY Chalk Mural: Create beautiful artwork in the museum courtyard using chalk to commemorate the life of Dr. MLK, Jr.!
Learn more about MLK Day at the MOAD booth where an “I Have A Dream” speech and poster of MLK will be displayed.
Activities for 2-6 year olds: Cut out your hand print, decorate and write your dream for a better world. It could be something for your community, your family, your school or for yourself. What contribution can you make? What are you good at? Turn your hand print into a necklace so that you can share your dreams with others.
Activities for 5-10 year olds: Create your own scratch board! Color your board with bright colors and then cover it with a black crayon as you think about what your dreams are for a better world! Think about the contributions you can make to your community or family. Then write your dream and scratch out to reveal the beauty of your dream with bamboo sticks!
This event is made possible in part by the generous contribution and support of the Yerba Buena Community Benefit District.
