Field Trips 2017: Grades 3 – 8

2017-18  |  Grades 3-8 Field Trip descriptions (click to read more):

MUSIC VIDEO (Grades 3-8)

Students produce music videos featuring their own original lyrics and music. Before and during the field trip students collaborate in groups to decide on a concept, create original lyrics, digitally compose their own music, coordinate dance routines, and perform the final product.

This field trip can be used as a platform to enhance classroom curriculum. For example, students' productions can be based on a story or play, represent a scene from history, illustrate a scientific discovery, explore spoken-word poetry, or convey any concept or idea. The result is a fusion between art and technology that introduces students to the production process while nurturing their creative confidence.

Available: Tuesdays: 9:30am - 11:30am or 12:15pm - 2:15pm
Duration: 2 hours
Grade Level: Grades 3-8
Group Size: 36 students max
Take Away: Teachers will receive links to download their students' music videos via email
Chaperones: Maximum of 6 chaperones (including the teacher)
Cost: $200/session; Fee-waived trips available for qualifying schools

CREATIVE COMBO (Grades 3-8)

In a Creative Combo, students engage with two of CCM’s most popular exhibit spaces – the Animation Studio, Music Studio, Tech Lab or Innovation Lab. Students are encouraged to explore their creative process while learning some combination of stop-motion animation skills, music video production, how to prototype and collaboratively solve a design challenge, or how to program robots.

When signing up, choose two of the following field trip experiences:

  • Clay Animation
  • Music Video (Wednesdays & Thursdays only)
  • Innovation Lab
  • Robot Coding (Grades 4-8 only)

Available: Wednesdays - Fridays: 10:00am - 12:00pm
Duration: 2 hours
Grade Level: Grades 3-8
Group Size: 36 students max
Chaperones: Maximum of 6 chaperones (including the teacher)
Cost: $200/session; Fee-waived trips available for qualifying schools

INNOVATION CHALLENGE (Grades 3-8)

In this two-hour field trip, students work collaboratively to build creative solutions to a unique design challenge using a specific set of materials (bubble wrap, styrofoam, pipe cleaners, etc.). With the help of museum educators students learn brainstorming techniques, the fundamentals of prototyping, and engage in creative problem-solving. After building their prototype, students present their solution to the class.

The creative constraints embedded within each design challenge teach students adaptability and flexibility when problem-solving. The Innovation Challenge can be used as a platform to enhance classroom curriculum. If you are interested in customized challenges that align with your lesson plans, please let us know at least two weeks in advance.

Available: Tuesdays: 9:30am - 11:30am or 12:15pm - 2:15pm
Duration: 2 hours
Grade Level: Grades 3-8
Group Size: 36 students max
Take Away: Student groups can take their prototypes home
Chaperones: Maximum of 6 chaperones (including the teacher)
Cost: $200/session; Fee-waived trips available for qualifying schools

CLAY ANIMATION (Grades 3-8)

In this project-based field trip, students learn the basics of stop-motion animation. After designing their own clay characters, students collaborate in groups to produce a short animated film using multimedia tools.

Students work together to develop a story concept, sculpt clay characters, and film a stop-motion animation movie. Clay Animation can be adapted to almost any classroom curriculum and provides an enjoyable learning platform to explore a wide array of topics. For example, students can animate a scene from a play or novel, represent a scene from history, or illustrate a scientific discovery. This engaging field trip cultivates creative expression, communication, and teamwork skills, resulting in unique clay animation movies that students can take home and share.

Available: Tuesdays: 9:30am - 11:30am or 12:15pm - 2:15pm; Wednesdays - Fridays: 10:00am - 12:00pm or  12:15pm - 2:15pm
Duration: 2 hours
Grade Level: Grades 3-8
Group Size: 36 students max
Take Away: Teachers will receive links to download their students' movies via email
Chaperones: Maximum of 6 chaperones (including the teacher)
Cost: $200/session; Fee-waived trips available for qualifying schools

ROBOT CODING (Grades 4-8)

In this two-hour field trip students are introduced to computer programming using Blockly, a drag-and-drop visual programming tool, and robots from Wonder Workshop. Students collaborate in small groups to complete coding challenges while creating and navigating their own maze. More experienced coders can program robots to respond to sensor inputs and use loops to avoid obstacles. Multiple programming concepts are taught through fun and easy-to-understand activities, giving students creative ways to explore robot coding.

Available: Tuesdays: 9:30am - 11:30am or 12:15pm - 2:15pm
Duration: 2 hours
Grade Level: Grades 4-8
Group Size: 32 students max
Chaperones: Maximum of 6 chaperones (including the teacher)
Cost: $200/session; Fee-waived trips available for qualifying schools

CLAY ANIMATION WITH SOUND EFFECTS (Grades 4-8)

In this field trip students learn the basics of stop-motion animation and post-production tools. In the first half of this experience students design their own clay characters before working in small groups to produce a short animated film. In the second half, students learn post-production techniques by adding sound effects to their movies.

Students work together to develop a story concept, sculpt clay characters, film a stop-motion animation movie, and add sound effects. Clay Animation with Sound Effects can be adapted to almost any classroom curriculum and provides an enjoyable learning platform to explore a wide array of topics. For example, students can animate a scene from a play or novel, represent a scene from history, illustrate a scientific discovery, as well as developing a compelling soundtrack to add to their film. This immersive field trip experience cultivates creative expression, communication, teamwork skills, and results in unique clay animation movies with soundtracks that students can take home and share.

Available: Wednesdays - Fridays: 10:00am - 2:00pm
Duration: 4 hours
Grade Level: Grades 4-8
Group Size: 36 students max
Take Away: Teachers will receive links to their students clay animation movies via email
